CHAPTER SIXTEEN

WENDY

The tapping of Wendy’s foot against the floor mat built the farther away they drove from downtown Trinity. She glanced at the side-view mirror every few seconds, searching for Thin Man.

Sam grasped the steering wheel with one hand, leaving his injured arm to rest. He shifted his weight in the seat.

A slight grunt seeped from his pursed lips. His face contorted in discomfort. He didn’t complain about the gunshot wound, but more so of the fact that Chief Jones sent him away.

“I should’ve stayed behind to help him,” Sam said, shaking his head. “We could’ve figured something else out instead of me leaving.”

Wendy chewed the ends of her dirty nails. She lowered her hand to her thighs. “I’m just sorry that all of this is happening. The past few days have been horrible, to say the least. I’m so lost on what to do and where to go. It’s like the world has been turned upside down and gone mad overnight. I keep hoping this is a dream and that I’ll soon wake up, but I know I won’t.”

“You do know none of this is your fault, right?” Sam asked, slowing and taking the approaching exit to the west. “I doubt you did anything to incur any of this. Sometimes, bad things happen to good people. Just the way it is.”

“I guess.” Wendy shrugged and kept an eye on the side-view mirror. “Although, the path of dead bodies in my wake would suggest otherwise.”

Sam glanced at his shoulder, studying the bloody wound, then said, “Again, not your fault. All things considered, you’ve done more to get yourself out of these bad spots than most folks. I’m rather impressed by that.”

Wendy craned her neck and leaned forward in the seat to get a better look at his shoulder. “That was one thing my grandparents and dad wanted was for me to be able to take care of myself. I think they accomplished that. How’s your shoulder holding up?”

“Hurts like hell, but I’ll live,” Sam replied, focusing on the road ahead.

“Have you ever been shot before today?” Wendy asked, sitting back.

Sam shook his head. “Nope. Outside the shooting range, I’ve never discharged my firearm. Not much happens in small towns compared to the larger cities like Houston or Dallas. That’s one of the main reasons I’ve considered transferring to one of the departments in Houston.”

Wendy cringed at the blood on his shirt and the grimace that lingered on his face. “Well, it looks painful, to say the least. You seem to be handling it well. Better than most people I think.”

“My tolerance for pain is pretty high,” Sam replied. “I’ve broken bones and have had a number of other things done in the past, so I’m no stranger to pain.”

“In either case, you need to take it easy.” Wendy tilted her head at the steering wheel. “Did you want me to drive so you can relax? I’m a good driver. Promise.”

Sam shook his head, then pointed through the windshield. “The chief’s place isn’t too far away.
